The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics venues are classified into two main groups: venues within Rio de Janeiro and venues outside Rio de Janeiro. This post is about venues outside Rio, and they will host 2016 Summer Olympics men and women football matches.

As much as the host is Rio de Janeiro, there are five venues outside the host city. These five venues are in Belo Horizante, Brasilia, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo

Belo Horinzante 2016 Summer Olympics venue

Belo Horizante, is the sixth largest city in Brazil and the 4th most populous city. It is the capital of Minas Gerais state in the southern Brazilian shore of the Atlantic Ocean.

The football matches that will be played at the Belo Horizante's Mineirao Stadium are detailed below.

Men Football matches to be held Mineirao Stadium

Belo Horizante’s Mineirao Stadium will host two group matches scheduled to take place on 10th of August. This stadium will also host one of the second stage match scheduled for the 13th of August as well as a men Bronze medal match on the 20th of August.

Women Football matches to be held Mineirao Stadium

The women matches to be hosted at this stadium will be two group matches scheduled for the 10th of August. Besides, on the 6th of August two more group matches will take place. Other women matches to be held at the Mineirao Stadium are a quarter finals slotted for 12th of August as well as a semifinal match on the 16th of August.

Brasilia 2016 Summer Olympics venue

Brasilia is the capital city of Brazil and is fairly a recent city have been established on April 1960.

Brasilia is also the federal capital of the State of Brasilia. It is the fourth most populous city in Brazil, located in the central western Brazilian highlands with and elevation of 1,172 meters above sea level.

Brasilia’s Mané Garrincha will be the venue for the Summer Olympics football match for both men and women as shown below.

Men Football matches to be held Mané Garrincha

The men football matches for the Summer Olympics football to be held at the Mané Garrincha are, four Group A matches on the 4th and 7th August.

Besides it will host one Group C match as well as one Group D match on the 10th of August. The final match for the men football will be held in the Brasilia stadium will be a second stage matches that will take place on the 13th of August.

Women Football matches to be held Mané Garrincha

Three Summer Olympics football port women matches will be held at the Mané Garrincha. Two Group E and F matches are scheduled to take place on the 9th of August. Another quarter final women football match will take place on the 12th of August.

Manaus 2016 Summer Olympics venue

The Amazon located Manaus city will the 2016 Summer Olympics football matches for both men and women. It is the seventh most populous city in Brazil and it’s known to get hot and humid due to its low elevation of about 50 meters above sea level and it location in an Equatorial climatic condition.

The city’s Arena da Amazônia will be the venue for only four men Group B matches taking place on 4th and 7th of August.

Women Football matches to be held Arena da Amazônia

The stadium will host only two group women matches on the 9th of August for Groups G and E.

Sao Paulo 2016 Summer Olympics venue

The most populous and wealthiest of Brazil cities; Sao Paulo has a population of over 10 million people. It’s an ancient city have been established in 1554.

The Sao Paulo scheduled matches for the 2016 Summer Olympics football sport will be played at the Arena Corinthians.

Men Football matches to be held Arena Corinthians

There will be four football matches which are one match for the Group A and a Group B match both taking place on the 10th of August. On the 13th of August, a second stage match will take place and a quarter final match will close the curtain for the 2016 Summer Olympics football match on the 17th of August.

Women Football matches to be held Arena Corinthians

Four matches for the 2016 Summer Olympics women football sport for Group F will be played on the 3rd and 6th of August. A semifinal match for women will take place on the 12th of August with a Bronze match scheduled to take place at the Arena Corinthians on the 13th of August.

Salvador’s 2016 Summer Olympics venue

This was the first capital city of Brazil and it’s the third most populous city in Brazil. Established in 1549, its one of the oldest city in the Country.

Salvador’s Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova will be a fifth venue outside Rio that will host Summer Olympics football sport matches.

Men Football matches to be held Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova:

The men matches to be played at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova are four Group C matches on the 4th and 7th of August. Besides on the 10th of August one Group A match and a Group B match will take place.

A second stage match will be played on the 13th of August.

Women Football matches to be held Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova

There will be only three women football matches for the 2016 Summer Olympics football sport. Two will be Group F matches taking place on the 9th of August as well as a quarter final match taking place on the 12th of August.

There are other 2016 Summer Olympics football sport matches for both men and women that will also take place in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium and Estádio Nilton Santos or commonly known as Olympic stadium.

Salvador's Itaipava Arena Fonte just like Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians, Manaus' Arena da Amazônia, Belo Horizante's Mineirao Stadium and Brazil's Capital City; Brasilia's Mané Garrincha Stadium are the 5 venues that will host football sport for both men and women in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Overview on Brazil’s Salvador

Salvador is Brazil’s third largest city with a population of almost three million inhabitants. It’s after Rio de Janeiro in terms of population, Rio is second most populous city while Sao Paulo which is the country’s most populous city. Belo Horizante closely follows as the 4th most populous city.

This city will also offer splendid tourist attraction, and when you are there do some look around for something to show you are in Salvador.

These 4 Brazil’s most populous cities will be part of the 5 venues that will host some sports in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics besides Rio. Another fifth city, Manaus, which is the seventh largest will also host some matches for both men and women football sports for the Summer Olympics, that is scheduled to take place this coming August.

Salvador has a great history and its fairly an ancient city established in 1549. It was the first capital city for Brazil. It is a splendid city that is divided into two by an escarpment measuring over 80 meters. This natural barrier divides the city to upper and lower towns and the two parts of the Salvador city are connected by an elevator built in 1873.

The city economic advantages includes agriculture and marine activities, which are the main source of wealth in this north east Brazilian state making it the second wealthiest city after Sao Paulo. This means Salvador is richer than Rio de Janeiro.

Salvador is the capital of Brazil’s north east Bahia state, and its spectacular as it is located in 2nd largest peninsula in the world while it’s Brazil largest. The triangular shaped peninsula divided Brazil’s Bay of All Saints and the Atlantic Ocean.

The city was established by Francisco Pereira Coutinho in 1534 and he is considered the first captain of Bahia state. However, Francisco Pereira Coutinho was not the first European to settle in Salvador but a ship wreak victim; Caramuru, whose real name was Diogo Álvares Correia.

Caramuru was instrumental in bringing together the Portuguese and the local inhabitants of the Indian origin. Salvador is a sea level city with an altitude of only 8 meters above sea level; this makes it hot and humid.

The city municipality is not very big as it measures only 693 square kilometers.

The 2016 Summer Olympics football sport will take place in Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, located in this magnificent and ancient Brazilian City.

Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova will host football for both men and women. Designed by Germany Architects; Marc Duwe and Claas Schulitz, It is a 55,000 capacity stadium and was built as part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup venue.

It costed US$ 267 million to build, with the construction starting in 2010 taking three years to finish and was opened in 2013, this is over a year before the World Cup games in Brazil.

This stadium measures 105 by 68 meters in dimensions and has complete grass surface.

2016 Summer Olympics men football matches, Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova will be the venue for four Group C matches on the 4th and 7th of August. On the 10th of August it will host a Group A match and a Group B match.

The last men matches will be a second stage match among the Winner of Group B and the Runners-up of Group A. This men’s last match will be played on the 13th of August.

Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova will also host three of the women football matches in 2016 Summer Olympics. These three matches will be 2 Group F matches on the 9th of August and one women quarter final match on 12th of August.

Overview on Brazil’s Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is the most populous city in Brazil with a population of over 10 million people. This high population also makes it the world’s 12th most populous city; you can imagine how big it is. This high population has also made it the richest Brazilian city and this is evident with its beautiful architectural designs as well as high end shopping malls, parks and hotels.

Unlike other Brazilian recent cities, Sao Paulo is one of the oldest have been established in the 15th century by Portuguese catholic missionaries.

Today, it’s a modern city with vibrant city life, clubs and casinos, despite have stated as a missionary center with a Jesuit college of 12 Portuguese priests. These priests had a desire to convert Indians to Christians.

Some of the priests were José de Anchieta and his colleague Manuel da Nóbrega, who first established Portuguese settlement by building a village on top of a hill located between the rivers Anhangabaú, which passes through this city’s older part. Anhangabaú has been canalized and on its shore it offers spectacular picnic, meetings location as well as carnival ground and other entertainment for the city residents and visitors alike. I believe this is something the founding missionary’s fathers from the Jesuit order could not have approved.

The other river that bordered the old settlement is Tamanduateí River, which is still in the City’s vicinity with its mouth feeding to the Atlantic Ocean.

The missionary village was known as São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga which included a missionary college by the name of Colégio de São Paulo de Piratiningaon which opened its doors on the 25th of January 1554.

Such was the humble beginning of this great Brazilian city of St Paul, translated into Portuguese to Sao Paulo, the name that we know if. Piratininga, where the first city settlement was built is today’s one of the Sao Paulo state’s municipal with a population of about 10,000 people. Looking at Sao Paulo today you can think the above mentioned first structures were made of stones but no, the missionaries used the Indian labor and design, making these ancient structures modest as they were made of earth unlike today’s high end skyscrapers that dotes this Sao Paulo.

The name of the city; Sao Paulo was due to the Colégio de São Paulo de Piratiningaon commemoration of the conversion of St Paul to Christianity and change of his name from Saul the anti-Christ to Paul as we all known him today.

Arena Corinthians

This is yet another 2016 Summer Olympics 5 venues that are not part of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics clusters. These other 4 venues that not in Rio are Manaus’ Arena da Amazônia, Belo Horinzante’s Mineirao Stadium, Brasilia’s Mané Garrincha and Salvador’s Itaipava Arena Fonte.

Arena Corinthians is fairly a new stadium had been built to accommodate matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil. Its construction started on the 30th of May and took almost three years to complete and opened its doors on April of 2014, just some few months before the World Cup began. It is a great stadium that can host up to 50,000 people or more as it held 63,267 on 9th of July during the match between Argentina and Netherlands.

Unlike many other stadiums in Brazil and the world at large, Arena Corinthians does not have pure grass surface but a mixture of ryegrass and artificial fiber. Due to lack of land and funds to purchase a new site, the two initial stadiums had to be demolished; these two are Pacaembu Stadium and Alfredo Schürig Stadium. However despite the high cost of its construction as it costed Brazil taxpayers over US$ 430 million to build plus the demolition of two stadiums, the Arena Corinthians did not disappoint as it resulted to an iconic magnificent rectangular shaped stadium that defied the old and common circular shape of most football stadiums in the world.

This unique design of the stadium was the work of Aníbal Coutinho; a Brazilian architect who designed it with assistance of others designers and engineers to create a stunning structure that will host football matches for the first Rio Summer Olympics.

Arena Corinthians will host four football matches for the 2016 Summer Olympics men football sport and five Group F matches and the Bronze match for the 2016 Summer Olympics women football sport.

Manaus is yet another hosting city of the men and women football matches for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics football sport. This is also a venue outside the official 2016 Olympics host city Rio de Janeiro. This makes it’s stadium; Arena da Amazônia one of the five venues which are outside Rio de Janeiro jurisdiction part of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

The other 4 venues outside host city; Rio de Janeiro jurisdictions are:

Due to hosting some of the past FIFA World Cup matches, the city infrastructure was greatly improved with street renovated and repaved, a new airport built and communication infrastructure greatly improved.

Manaus is the seventh most populous city in Brazil with a population of about 2 million people according the 2014 Brazil population census. It has area of 11,401 square kilometers and Amazon River passed through it.

Arena da Amazônia

Now let’s turn to the Arena da Amazônia, which is the venue for 2016 Summer Olympics football sport for both men and women. The stadium was constructed as part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This 2014 stadium; Arena da Amazônia was built after a much older stadium Vivaldao was demolished. Vivaldao was the largest stadium in the city and had been built in the years between 1958 and 1970.

The Arena da Amazônia is much larger compared to Vivaldao. Arena da Amazônia has capacity to hold 44,000 football fans, while Vivaldao used to hold only 31,000 fans.

For the Summer Olympics in Brazil, Arena da Amazônia will host four Group B matches for men football on 4th and 7th of August. Those will be the only men football matches played in this hot and humid stadium.

As for the women football matches for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics football, two group matches will be played on the 9th of August at the Manus’ Arena da Amazônia.

These two matches will be for Groups G and E.
