How Team Great Britain (Team GB) has been performing in the Summer Olympics

Team GB or the Great Britain Olympics Team as it usually known has taken part in all the 28 editions of the Summer Olympics. It’s among the five nations that have taken part in all the editions of the games, since the modern Summer Olympics inception in the 1896 Olympics held in Athens.

Team GB in the last edition of the Summer Olympics (London 2012) of the games performance was just splendid to say the least. They managed to get 29 gold medals and were ranked third. Among the gold medals they got was one by Andy Murray in Men's Tennis Singles. This was one of the best performance though they ranked 1st in the 1908 Summer Olympics edition held in London.

Team GB has had a total of 7,173 athletes who have participated in all the editions of the Summer Olympics Games, however some may have participated in more than one Summer Olympics edition, hence the number is slightly lower. In all the editions of these games, Team GB have managed to accumulate a total of 780 medals of which 236 are gold medals while 272 have been silver medal and 272 bronze medals.

In the first edition of the games held in Athens in 1896, Team GB was among the 14 nations that participated and managed to get to the fifth position in the medal table after winning a total of 7 medals of which 2 were gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. This was a great start especially when they came third after host; Team France and Team USA in the 1900 Summer Olympics held in Paris.

Things changed when the team only sent 6 athletes to participate in the first USA Summer Olympics edition in the State of Missouri’s St Louis; this was the 1904 Summer Olympics and managed to be in position six.

Team GB lowest number of participants were in the 1904 games. Except for 1904 and the 1896 edition, where they has a team of 10 competitors, they have never been represented by less than 100 athletes. The highest number of athletes Team GB has included in their contingent for a single edition of a Summer Olympics was in 1908 when they were represented by 676 athletes. This was the first edition in their home City of London.

When they hosted the 1908 Summer Olympics, it was the turning point as they led on the medal table managing 56 gold medals, 51 silver medals and 39 bronze medals; a total of 146 medals.

Little did the world know that would be the largest medal haul for Team GB for a very long time. Since the 1908 games, Team GB’s fortune has been that of ups and down, with the worst performance recorded in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in USA’s Atlanta city of Georgia.

Team GB had a contingent of 300, of which 184 were men and 116 were women and they participated in 22 out of 26 sports featuring in this 4th edition of a Summer Olympics in the US soil.

On the final day of the games; on the 4th of August 1996, Team GB was in the worst position ever in their Summer Olympics history; position 36. They managed to win a gold medal, 8 silver medals and 6 bronze. All the medals they won totaled to 9.

In summary, Team GB has been at position one once in the 1908 games, position 3 four times which are the following editions: 1900, 1912, 1920 and in the last 2012 Summer Olympics, held in London.

It was position 4 in two editions; the 1924 edition and the Beijing Summer Olympics of 2008. Team GB has been position 8 once and that was at the Melbourne 1956 edition and position 9 in the Moscow Summer Olympics of 1980.

Team GB has been position 10 for a record 6 times. They were ranked 10th first in the 1932 edition, then in the Berlin Summer Olympics of 1936. They were also position 10 in the 1964, 1968, Sydney 2000 and in Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympics.

The table below summarizes all the Team GB’s achievements in all the 28 editions of the Summer Olympics.
